Car Tales: Rare Luxury Living, The Porsche 928GTS 5-Speed

‘Exclusivity! I love that word. And here at Beverly Hills Car Club right now I have a classic example of such exclusivity. And it really is classic, like the very definition of a classic car. It is one of only 54 examples ever produced for the US market of a 1993 Porsche 928GTS 5-Speed.

‘So what was its history?

‘Well, this car we have at the moment was the final evolution of the Porsche 928, a model produced by Porsche from 1978 until 1995. The intention was to replace the already revered and legendary 911 with a car that had all the oomph of a top-of-the-range sports car with a luxury sedan’s refinement, comfort and equipment.

‘By the late 1960s, Porsche had firmly established itself as a manufacturer of high-performance sports cars. But in the wake of the early 1970s oil crisis the company’s executives, including owner Ferdinand Porsche, were beginning to consider adding a more fuel-efficient luxury touring car to the line-up.

‘Managing director Ernst Fuhrmann was pressuring Ferdinand to approve development of the new model due to concerns that the then-current flagship model, the 911, was reaching the limits of its potential.

‘Fuhrmann believed that the future of the company relied upon grand touring cars with conventional engines rather than unconventional sports cars. Slumping sales of the 911 in the mid-1970s seemed to confirm that the model was approaching the end of its economic life cycle. Fuhrmann envisioned the new range-topping grand tourer model as being the best possible combination of a sports coupé and a luxury sedan.

‘This would set it apart from the 911, with its relatively spartan interior and true sports car performance. The targets were that the car had to compete on a par with offerings from Mercedes-Benz and BMW while also being successful in the United States, Porsche’s main market at the time.

‘And you know how you always associate 911s with a rear-mounted engine? And therefore imagine that all Porsches are similar? Well, sorry to tell you this, but the 928 has not only the distinction of being the company’s first production V8-powered model but also it is its only coupe powered by a front-mounted V8 engine with a rear-wheel drive. (In the original thinking the 928 was to have had a mid-engine layout but it was decided this did not allow sufficient room in the passenger compartment.)

‘The 928 may not have had the same iconic appeal as the 911, but it was still a fantastically great car and one that was exceptionally different to what had gone before it from Porsche.
‘The 928 GTS did not exist before January 1992.
‘You know how it works in the motor trade: the car listed as belonging to the next year often is released for sale twelve months prior to that. But as we are aware that appellation ‘GTS’ has become abused and distorted in recent times. Next thing you know one of those pavement scooters will be being described as a GT.
‘Except that the 928GTS is the real stuff, the right stuff. Its 5.4-liter V8 makes 345 horsepower and 369 lb/ft of torque, solid power which propelled the 928 GTS from 0-60 mph in a startling 5.4 seconds. And – my rule of thumb on the GT scale – does it offer luxury, comfortable driving at great speed?

‘You betcha: this front-engine Porsche will have you cruising the old N7 autoroute from Paris to the Monte Carlo casinos in the sniff of a whisper. In other words, the Porsche 928GTS is as top-notch as you can find, a helluva car, as refined as you might expect for such a marque.

‘The one we have here at Beverly Hills Car Club is the aforementioned scarce 1993 Porsche 928GTS 5-Speed, finished in its factory color Slate Grey Metallic (Q9) complemented with a Grey interior. As I said in my first paragraph, it is 1 of only 54 examples ever produced for the US market, and is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, V8 engine, power steering, twin exhaust finishers, four vented/perforated brake discs, VDO instruments, Bosch front fog lights, electric sliding sunroof, rear spoiler wing, ‘928 GTS’ badging, side marker lights, Bridgestone Potenza tires, air compressor, and a spare tire fitted in the trunk.
‘Amenities on our Porsche 928GTS include power side mirrors, automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, power windows, rear rubber bumperettes, sun visors with vanity mirrors, and a rear window wiper. In addition to the equipment, this classic comes with an owner’s manual booklet, a clean Carfax report, and a plethora of receipt copies totaling over $42,000 that has been invested into the vehicle dating from February 1995 through May 2022. The color code and options sticker are both still in place under the hood. This an extremely rare opportunity to be a part of a select few to acquire a limited edition 928GTS 5-Speed that is mechanically sound.

‘With its clean, simple dash, and large comprehensive gauges, and straightforward automatic climate controls, this is a really wonderful car, the last and best version of the Porsche 928.
