Car Tales: Really Incredible, 2010 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe

What an incredible car is this 2010 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe that we have at the moment at Beverly Hills Car Club.
Ever since the first model rolled off the line in 1925, the Phantom has been the last word in luxury motoring, used by the rich, famous and powerful around the world.

When this car that we have was brand new, it cost $458,000. As you might expect, these cars come with a lot of options. And this one is fully loaded. For example, this car has a handsome marine teak decking that looks like it’s a boat: that add-on alone cost $8,700. This Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe is like a house on wheels that you do not want to get out of: you want to live in it, love in it, and just have fun every moment you’re in it.
If you had a hard day at work – or at the gym – and you’re tired, and you think, ‘I’m not into closing doors any more…’, you get a bit of help: the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe’s self-closing door – on the Lincoln Continental known as ‘suicide doors’, but let’s not get into that….

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe is a luxury grand tourer manufactured by Rolls-Royce that debuted at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, on 7 January 2007.
It is based on the 2003 Rolls-Royce Phantom and has styling heavily derived from the 100EX, a concept car shown to celebrate the company’s centennial in 2004: the EX stands for experimental model. Several Drophead Coupes were used in the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony. The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe can do zero to 60 in 5.5 seconds and it has a top speed of 148 miles per hour.
‘It handles with the educated precision of the Nobel Prize–winning physicist that you’d have to be to repair it,’ wrote the late, great P J O’Rourke in Car And Driver after a test-drive of the Phantom in October 2009.
‘What’s shocking is not the enormity of the price or the enormity of the speed but the enormity of the enormity,’ continued the always perceptive O’Rourke. ‘A Phantom drophead coupe is almost as long and wide as a GMC Yukon XL and within one fat child of the same curb weight. Yet the Rolls drives like a Porsche—a Cayenne, at least.’

Wayne York Kung, product communications manager for Rolls-Royce North America, said it definitively: “The faster you drive, the smaller it gets.”
The impressive 2010 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe that we presently have at Beverly Hills Car Club is finished in its factory two-tone color scheme of Arctic White and Primer Grey gracefully complemented with a Moccasin interior.

Equipped with an automatic transmission, naturally-aspired 6.75 liter V12 aluminum-alloy engine with direct fuel-injection, four-wheel disc brakes, power steering, quad exhaust outlets.
Lambswool floor mats, electrically operated retractable soft-top roof with cashmere blend interior headlining, Spirit of Ecstasy grille ornament, rear-hinged coach doors, optional boot cover with teak decking, embroidered seats, veered instrument panel, three-spoke veneered steering wheel, side marker lights, Goodyear tires, and Rolls-Royce branded wheel center caps.
Additional convenience features include air conditioning, power-adjustable exterior mirrors, electrically adjustable front seats, power windows, AM/FM radio, cup holders, sun visors with illuminated vanity mirrors, map lights, door pockets, manufacturer’s literature, copy of the window sticker, and a very convenient umbrella located in the driver-side door. As I said, the original suggested retail price for this luxurious vehicle was $458,125.00 when it was first sold in the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Newport Beach dealership in Costa Mesa, California. Do not miss your opportunity to acquire such a refined and opulent Phantom Drophead Coupe that is offered in spectacular condition as well as being mechanically sound.
Like all the new Rolls-Royces the Phantom Drophead Coupe has that chunky, almost brutalist look. In this, the exterior resembles that of the 100EX. The 2-door 4-seat convertible has rearward opening coach doors and a two-tone color scheme that distinguishes between the upper and lower bodywork and frames the teak wood paneling of the convertible’s tonneau cover. But unlike the EX, with its aluminum hood, it is constructed of more easily maintained stainless steel.

The front fascia resembles that of the 100EX but its middle bodywork/raised bonnet/grille assemblage stops midway down rather than continuing downwards and bisecting the front bumper. The headlamps are also those of the 100EX/101EX concept and are similar to the Phantom’s. The deep set rectangular high beams are LED units while the round ‘faux-foglamp’ driving lights are projector-style xenon arc lamps. The exterior is available in more than 44,000 color combinations. The car combines aluminum technology and hand-crafted materials.
‘Here is a swell car,’ concluded the much lamented P J O’Rourke. ‘It’s not perfect, but it puts some much-needed fun, frivolity, and glamour back into driving.’
