Car Tales: Refined Brute, Ferrari 330GTC

‘A racing brute in a fine suit’ is how the Ferrari 330GTC was once described by a journalist. Hardly surprisingly, for the 330GTC is one of the most elegantly beautiful as well as puissant cars ever built, a treasure beyond price.

And so rare: only 598 examples ever produced.

The 330 GTC Coupé was unveiled at the 1966 Geneva Salon, as an additional model to the Ferrari production car range. It was designed by Pininfarina; the high-end design firm’s Aldo Bravarone has latterly been credited with shaping the 330 GTC: further Bravarone Ferrari masterworks included the 400 Superamerica Coupé Aerodinamico, 500 Superfast and the Dino Berlinetta Speciale, which foretold the 206 GT production car.

The 330 GTC Coupé was assembled at the Pininfarina works in Turin, before being delivered fully trimmed to Ferrari for fitment of mechanical components. The body forward of the windscreen was very similar in style to the Ferrari 500 Superfast model. The 330 GTC was unusual for a Ferrari in that it had a model badge on the boot lid, proclaiming ‘330’.

Prior to this only a very few cars had any model identity on them, and those that did were normally ‘Speciales’. The nose featured a slim, projecting ovoid radiator grille, with headlights in shallow recesses in the forward face of the wings, which had triple louvre engine bay exhaust outlets in their sides, bounded by a slim bright trim strip on three sides.

This was married to a tail section that was first used on the earlier 275 GTS, to produce a harmonious, light and elegant design that featured slim quarter bumpers at each corner. The 330 GTC had a cabin with very slim pillars, which gave an airy feel to the interior and excellent visibility.

The design was specific to this model, and was carried over to the later 365 GTC. The body was mounted on a 2,400 mm wheel base tubular steel chassis with factory reference number 592, and all were numbered in the odd chassis number road car sequence. The principal layout was very similar to that of the concurrently produced 275 GTB models, as the mechanical layout was virtually identical.

The standard road wheels were 7L x 14 in, fitted with 205 x 14 in tyres, of an elegant and smooth 10-hole alloy design, similar to those used on the sports racing competition Ferrari models of the period, with a knock-off spinner to the Rudge hub – Borrani wire wheels were available as an option. All models in the series were fitted with four wheel Girling disc brakes, with a cable-operated handbrake actuating separate callipers on the rear discs.

These cars featured the nose section of the Ferrari 365 California, with a redesigned glass area to the cabin that had a concave, curved rear screen between buttressed sail panels that ran down to a Kamm tail, on which were a pair of triple circular lens tail-light assemblies on a rectangular chrome-plated panel, above a full width wrap-around bumper.

The 330 GTC and 330 GTS were more like their 275 counterparts than the 330 GT 2+2.

They shared the short wheelbase of the 275 as well as its independent rear suspension and the same tyres, 205VR14 Michelin XWX.

These models were more refined than earlier Ferraris, quieter and easier to drive. It has been stated that this ‘was probably the first Ferrari in which you could actually enjoy a radio.’

At the moment at Beverly Hills Car Club we have a splendid example of one of these magnificent supercars, a 1967 Ferrari 330GTC featured with matching numbers. One of the most notable aspects of this Italian classic is its rarity. With – as I said above – only 598 examples produced between 1966 and 1968, this vehicle is a true collector’s dream. This particular example has had the same owner since 1974, a testament to its enduring appeal and desirability.

The original color scheme of this 330GTC is the elegant Bianco over a Rosso interior. Among the limited production of 330 GTCs, only 8 were originally painted in the Bianco, and out of those 8, a mere 3 boasted the captivating red leather interior. The remaining five were adorned with either a black or blue interior, making this particular combination even more exclusive and sought after.

This is a European version of the Ferrari 330GTC, making this gorgeous example a rare find for any collector or enthusiast. With a factory completion month of December 1966, this example was delivered new to the official dealer Motor S.a.s. di Carla Allegretti e C., located in Rome, Italy, in January 1967.

Our car is equipped with a manual transaxle, triple Weber carburetors, Veglia instrumentation, Pininfarina badging, toggle switches, electric windows, Carello headlamps, wood-rimmed steering wheel, chrome bumpers, center console, veneered trim panels, and Pirelli Cinturato tires.

It also comes with a California blue plate, complete with a sticker from the 1970s, adding to its vintage charm and authenticity.

Do not miss your opportunity to restore this scarce Ferrari 330GTC that has been tucked away for decades and will be a perfect addition to any collection.
