Behind the naming of the Ford Thunderbird was a weight of mythology: as anyone familiar with the work of the great thinker Carl Jung will understand, mythological archetypes carry great symbolic weight in our psyches. Could being associated with such an organism perhaps have contributed to the car’s great success? For the thunderbird is a legendary creature in certain North American indigenous people’s history and culture, considered a supernatural being of power and strength.

Credit for the development of the original Ford Thunderbird is given to Mr. Lewis Crusoe, a former GM executive who was lured out of retirement by Henry Ford II, and George Walker, chief stylist and a Ford vice-president. Crusoe and Walker met in France in October 1951.

Walking in the Grand Palais in Paris, Crusoe pointed at a European sports car and asked Walker, ‘Why can’t we have something like that?’

Walker promptly telephoned Ford’s HQ in Dearborn and told designer Frank Hershey about his conversation with Crusoe. Hershey took the idea and began working on the vehicle. On May 18 1953 Crusoe saw a painted clay model, which corresponded closely to the final car; he gave the vehicle the go-ahead in September that year after comparing it with current European trends. After Henry Ford II returned from the Los Angeles Autorama in 1953, he approved the final design concept.

The Ford Thunderbird was introduced as a response to Chevrolet’s new sports car, the Corvette, which was publicly unveiled in prototype form just a month previously. Under rapid development, the Thunderbird went from idea to prototype in about a year, being unveiled to the public at the Detroit Auto Show on February 20, 1954.

It was a two-seat design available with a detachable fiberglass hardtop and a folding fabric top.

Production of the Thunderbird began on September 9 of that year, with the car beginning sales as a 1955 model on October 22, 1954. Though sharing some design characteristics with other Fords of the time such as single circular headlamps and tail lamps, and modest tail fins, the Thunderbird was sleeker in shape and featured a hood scoop and a 150 mph (240 km/h) speedometer not available on other Fords. It used mechanical components from mass-market Ford models. The Thunderbird’s 102.0 inch (2,591 mm) wheelbase frame was a shortened version used in other Fords and the standard 292 cu inch (4.8 L) Y-block V8 came from Ford’s Mercury division.

Though inspired by and positioned directly against the Corvette, Ford advertised the Thunderbird at launch as a ‘personal car of distinction’ and put a greater emphasis on the car’s comfort and convenience features than its inherent sportiness.

The Thunderbird sold exceptionally well in its first year, outselling the Corvette by more than 23-to-one in 1955 with 16,155 Thunderbirds sold against 700 Corvettes.

At Beverly Hills Car Club right now we have a fabulous first generation Ford Thunderbird, a striking 1956 Ford Thunderbird Convertible, finished in Raven Black over a red and white interior and accompanied by both its convertible soft top and iconic removable porthole hardtop. The contrasting black porthole roof is one of the defining features of the first-generation Thunderbird, giving this T-Bird its unmistakable silhouette while adding versatility for both open-air cruising and more enclosed touring.

Under the hood, the Thunderbird is powered by a V8 engine paired with an automatic transmission and upgraded with a Quick Fuel Technology 4-barrel carburetor.

An aluminum radiator and air conditioning add practicality, while the dual exhaust outlets and generous chrome accents reinforce its classic American character. The exterior is further complemented by a subtle hood scoop, fender louvers, tail fins, chrome bumpers, wind wings, and a Continental Kit, a styling touch that became synonymous with the era and gave the Thunderbird additional long-distance touring appeal.

The interior retains the character expected of a mid-20th century Thunderbird, featuring a red and white bench seat, manual crank windows, wind wings, a classic three-spoke steering wheel, analog clock, instrument/utility light, and glove box. A Town & Country radio adds another period-correct touch, while the 15-inch steel wheels with wire-style wheel covers and American Classic wide whitewall tires complete the presentation.

The 1956 model year is particularly significant in Thunderbird history, as Ford introduced the porthole hardtop that year specifically to improve rearward visibility while giving the car an even more distinctive appearance. Combined with its two-top configuration, Continental Kit, V8 power, and iconic styling, this Thunderbird captures the character of one of Ford’s most recognizable postwar designs.

Whether admired as a collectible icon or enjoyed as an open-road cruiser, this Thunderbird embodies vintage American style, craftsmanship, and presence in equal measure and is mechanically sound.
