Car Tales: What A Handle, Porsche 968 Cabriolet

Voted by Performance Car magazine the best handling car of 1993, the 968 – often considered an entry level example to the Porsche marque – clearly had a lot going for it: like its very Porsche-like 0-60 mph time of 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 156 mph. The 968 was Porsche’s last new front-engined vehicle until the introduction of the Cayenne in 2003.

Originally designed as an evolution of the long serving 944 range, the 968 surprised all that drove it.

Launched in August 1991 for the 1992 model year and discontinued by the end of 1995, the reliable and rugged 968 was available in two body styles: a Coupe and a Cabriolet. Cabriolets came with reinforced bodyshells to compensate for the lack of a roof. Porsche quoted a weight of 1370kg for the Coupe and 1440kg for the Cabriolet.

Cabriolet top speeds were slightly slower owing to their messier aerodynamics, but it was dynamically pretty impressive despite the non-coupe body. All Porsche 968 cabriolets started life as coupes and were converted into cabriolet form by ASC in Heilbronn Germany.

Upon conversion they were shipped back to Zuffenhausen for final assembly alongside the 911 and 928.

North American spec 968 cabriolets were offered with the full range of Porsche factory-based options as well as the exterior and interior color choices.

Unlike 968s aimed at the rest of the world, Cabriolets destined for the US were 2-seaters and outfitted with a double glove box/package tray unit where the rear seats would typically be found. This was because Porsche did not want to go through the trouble of producing a US-mandated 3-point lap belt system for the rear cabriolet passengers.

That said, it should be noted that you can still locate the factory installed rear seat belt nuts in the floor of your US-spec 968 cabriolet if you are interested in the popular retrofit. And the 55 North American 968 cabs produced with the Canadian package retained their rear seats.

This classic vehicle is a testament to Porsche’s engineering prowess and timeless design, offering a perfect blend of performance, style, and open-top driving pleasure. If you’re in search of a classic sports car that combines power, style, and luxury, look no further than this 968 Cabriolet 6-speed that is mechanically sound. The 968 was mainly a restyled evolution of the 944 with design links visible to its predecessor.

Design work was done by Harm Lagaay, who had also designed the 924 and the 944. The front of the car largely resembled the top-of-the line 928, sharing its exposed pop-up headlamps and the integrated front bumper. This frontal design would eventually appear on the 911 (993) two years later.

The rear of the 968 was also redesigned, featuring fully colored rounded tail-lamps. Special bulbs were used in the tail-lamps which either illuminated a small area in amber color when the turn signals were activated or in white when the car was reversing. PORSCHE badging was fitted between the taillights just below the model type number. The rear apron was integrated into the smoothened rear bumper.

Harm Lagaay himself was a Dutch automobile designer.

He was educated in the Netherlands where he completed the studies at the IVA and went to work for the Dutch company Olyslager in Soest. In the late 1960s, Lagaay moved to Simca, then from 1971 for Porsche. He worked in the team designing the Porsche 911 and designed the Porsche 924. From 1977, Lagaay worked as Chief of Design at Ford in Cologne, and moved to BMW in 1985.

Lagaay designed the BMW Z1 sports car, with electric doors hiding under the car’s chassis and easily exchangeable body panels. This car was too advanced for its times and did not have commercial success, as only 8000 were sold. Today, the BMW Z1 is a collector’s item.

Lagaay returned to Porsche in 1989 as head of the ‘Style Porsche’ department in Weissach. As well as the Porsches of the period – the 968, 989 (the stillborn four door Porsche), 993 (the 1993-1997 generation of the 911 for which Englishman Tony Hatter is also credited), Boxster, 996 (the all-new 911 of 1997), Cayenne, Carrera GT – he also oversaw the company’s work for external clients and the opening of a studio in California.

Harm Lagaay retired from Porsche in July 2004.
