Espada: Uncovering a Forgotten Piece of Automotive History

Every Classic Lamborghini carries an air of mystery, and this recently surfaced 1969 Lamborghini Espada Series I 5-Speed—discovered in Southern California—is no exception. With its bold yellow finish and striking black interior, this grand tourer is a vivid reminder of the fearless design language that defined late-1960s Italian exotics.

One of only 186 examples built in the first production series between 1968 and 1969, this Espada represents a rare chance to own a genuine piece of Lamborghini history. Sporting two original California black license plates, it hints at a long life spent under the sun, perhaps cruising Pacific Coast highways or making dramatic entrances at Hollywood dinner parties.

Beneath its low, sharply styled bodywork lies a matching-numbers 3.9-liter V12, fed by six Weber carburetors and paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Period features abound, from its wood-rimmed steering wheel and Jaeger instrumentation to the single bullet-style wing mirror that feels plucked straight from a 1960s Italian design sketch.

After years in storage, this Espada is currently not running, but it stands as a remarkable candidate for recommissioning. With expert attention, it could once again channel the deep, resonant soundtrack of its V12 down open roads—just as Ferruccio Lamborghini intended.
