Just over a decade after Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica founder Frank Reisner partnered with engineer Milt Brown to create the Apollo GT, the 1971 Intermeccanica Indra was debuted at the Geneva Automobile Show. Reisners standing business model had long been one of joining European sports car aesthetics with American motor engineering, and the 1971 Intermeccanica Indra was no exception in this regard. The Indra, which was available as either a comfortable or in two hatchback variants, owed its sleek look to the famous Italian designer Franco Scaglione. With a promising debut attributable to its gorgeous appearance and the power of a V-8 under its hood. the 1971 Intermeccanica Indra seemed poised to make a sizable splash in the worldwide sports car scene.

An exaggeratedly elongated hood and a gracefully sloping hatchback gave the Indra an aerodynamic, agile appearance. Those aspects combined with the powerful engine under that lengthy hoodeither the Opel straight-6 or a Chevrolet V-8to render the Intermeccanica Indra a formidable and credible contender in the larger sports car arena. But with this model, Reisner was forced to relive a chapter of his companys early history. Like the Apollo GT before it, the Indra would be produced in very small numbers; fewer than 130 in all. And as most units were sold in Germany, tracking one down in the United States might best be left to the professionals.
