By the early-1970s, Frank Reisners singularly unique automotive enterprise, known as Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica, had experienced a number of marketplace ups and downs in its fourteen years. And while the 1973 Intermeccanica Indra was arguably a design and engineering triumph, it would ultimately fail to make the commercial splash Reisner had envisioned for it. Aesthetically, the 1973 Intermeccanica Indra was a stunning, bearing many hallmarks of the Italian sports car appeal, just as one would expect of a body conceived of by the renowned and artistically gifted Franco Scaglione. Whether as a convertible or in one of its two hatchback variants, the 1973 Intermeccanica Indras was a marvelous beauty of a machine and predictably had heads turning during its Geneva Automobile Show debut two years earlier.
In keeping with Frank Reisners business model (which stemmed from his Milt Brown partnership), the Intermeccanica Indra combined European agility and grace with the power of either a beef-eating American V-8, provided by Chevrolet, or a tightly engineered Opel straight-6. Both options aligned with the multinational amalgamation spirit of Intermeccanicas manufacturing schematic. Italian bodies and foreign engines. Nevertheless, and despite Reisners best efforts, the Chevrolet partnership was short-lived and Intermeccanica suffered commercially because of it. The foremost casualty of that dissolution was the Indra, which saw only 127 total units manufactured, about half of which were convertibles. As most of those 127 units were sold in Germany, the American marketplace was largely untouched by this particular Intermeccanica entry. This makes finding Indra in the here and now somewhat difficult, though there are options available to dedicated buyers.
