A unique operator in the sports car industry, Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica was in its fifteenth year when the 1974 Intermeccanica Indra was released to the buying public. For reasons of an aborted partnership with Chevrolet a few years into its production run, the 1974 Intermeccanica Indra would be the last of its short-lived kind. Even with several year manufacturing years behind it and having followed on the heels of the popular Italia, fewer than 130 Indra would be produced once the last 1974 Intermeccanica Indra rolled off the assembly line. This brief lifespan and low unit yield was certainly not indicative of anything lacking in the model, which had been designed by the inspired Franco Scaglione and was sold either as a convertible or in one of two hatchback versions.
Before the collaboration expired, Intermeccanica had relied on Chevrolet to provide many Indra V-8 powertrains, while others used the Opel straight-6. Much like the Apollo GT and its Italia successor, the Indra was a medley of international parts, component, and design features; there was something about that blend of an Italian body with an American heart that resonated with the right buyer. Not that there were overly many buyers of the Indra; so few were produced and most of these found homes in the German market. Unlike the Italia, which had overcome its Apollo predecessors manufacturing limitations, the Indra was fated to exist in thin quantities, never making the commercial dent Reisner had intended for it. But modern buyers might still track down their Indra, whether convertible or hatchback, provided they work with a knowledgeable dealer.
