When Rolls-Royce released the Corniche in 1971, they reestablished their image as an exclusive automobile manufacturer. The Corniches inspirational predecessor, the Silver Shadow, was Rolls-Royces most widely produced car. When the Corniche was released, the company decided again to limit their production; only about 4,330 Corniche models were manufactured between 1971 and 1987. The 1983 Rolls-Royce Corniche was designed with performance and handling in mind. It had a powerful OHV V8 engine that was capable of reaching a top speed of 120 mph, despite its heavy weight of nearly three tons. All Corniche model years were equipped with a state-of-the-art hydraulic suspension made by Citroen, and Corniche models from 1977 and beyond upgraded to rack-and-pinion steering. This, combined with its ultra-safe four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, helped make the Corniche one of the safest automobiles on the road. Rolls-Royce switched from a carburetor to a Bosch fuel injection pump the same year that it upgraded the Corniches steering system.
