First brought to the public in 1955, the 1956 Mercedes Benz 190SL was designed as a way to give everyday consumers a version of the powerful and iconic Mercedes Benz 300SL. Although the general consensus was that the 190SL laced power and performance when compared to its 300SL counterpart, today the 190SL continues to be one of the most affordable collectors cars in the Mercedes brand. Interestingly, the basic shape of the Mercedes 190SL was arrived at almost immediately. It featured headlights mounted at the leading edge of the front fenders, small strakes over the front wheel arch, a graceful curve up and over the rear fender to a sloping rear trunk, and the open mouth front air intake with the floating three-pointed start that had become so iconic in previous models. First dbuted at the 1954 New York Motor Show, the car received quite a few styling touches from the prototype before its second premier at the Geneva Salon in March 1955.

With these vehicles, rust is of course the enemy. In fact, the 190SL's were rust prone from the beginning and were never adequately protected from rust taking over. Luckily the hood, trunk lid, and doors are aluminum, however, you should also inspect the bottom undercarriage of the car to ensure you are fully aware of any rust problems. Rust-prone areas include the spare tire wells, rear frame sections, underside of frame sections, bumper mounting areas, floors, and suspension trailing arm-mounting point. Be sure to adequately explore these areas before purchasing your 1956 Mercedes Benz 190SL or any model year.
