Giulia Sprint Speciale: Che Bella! The Giulia Sprint Speciale appeared in 1963 and was a distinctive and quite different looking Coupe. Fitted with a Veloce engine and with the now standard five-speed gearbox, the Giulia Sprint Speciale or SS was popular in circuit racing. During the 1960s, the Sprint Speciale became the road-going Alfa Romeo to have. Popular for its extra engine capacity and aerodynamic shape, it offered owners effortless high-speed cruising and gave owners an affordable and practical way to travel in style.

Today, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale is loved for many of these same reasons. The last survivor of the 101 Series, it is estimated approximately 1,400 of the Giulia SS were produced prior to production ending in 1966. RuddSpeed converted a small number of these cars to right hand drive. When compared to its sister model, the Giulietta Sprint Speciale, the interior of the Giulia SS was more comfortable. Instruments on the dashboard had a different arrangement and the bottom of the dashboard was padded with the same material as the seats. There was a big handle on the passenger side, and an ashtray behind the gearshift lever. The area behind the seats now resembled a real bench for passengers, but was really only good enough for luggage.

What’s The Difference: Giulia SS vs. Giulletta SS

Significantly More Power and Performance The 1.6L twin-cam engine producing 110 hp at 6,500 rpm versus the Giulietta’s 1.3L unit represents a substantial 23% displacement increase. This translates to dramatically better acceleration and a top speed approaching 130 mph compared to the Giulietta’s 100 mph ceiling – a genuine supercar-level performance for its era.

Modern Disc Brakes vs Obsolete Drums The Giulia’s four-wheel disc brakes were cutting-edge technology in 1963, providing vastly superior stopping power, fade resistance, and modulation compared to the Giulietta’s antiquated drum setup. This safety and performance advantage cannot be overstated when discussing a 130 mph sports car.

Refined Interior and Dashboard Design The leather-wrapped dashboard with improved ergonomics and upscale materials reflected Alfa Romeo’s evolution toward true luxury sports car territory. The Giulietta’s painted, single-color dash appears crude by comparison – the Giulia represented Italian craftsmanship at its finest.

Improved Chassis Dynamics Built on the more advanced Giulia platform, the SS benefited from refined suspension geometry, better weight distribution, and improved handling characteristics that made it not just faster in a straight line, but genuinely superior through corners.

Dual Weber Carburetion System The twin Weber 40 DCOE carburetors provided superior fuel metering, throttle response, and tuning potential compared to the Giulietta’s simpler setup – this was racing-derived technology that delivered both performance and the intoxicating sound that made Alfa engines legendary.

Why We Love The Giulia SS

Unmatched Aerodynamic Efficiency With a drag coefficient of just 0.28, the Bertone-designed body was decades ahead of its time – better than many modern cars. While Porsche 911s, Jaguar E-Types, and Ferrari 250s were faster in raw terms, none could match the NSX-like efficiency that gave the Giulia SS exceptional fuel economy and high-speed stability.

Twin-Cam Technology Advantage Alfa Romeo’s twin-cam engine technology was more advanced than the pushrod engines in Corvettes, more reliable than Ferrari’s temperamental V12s, and offered better specific output than Porsche’s air-cooled flat-sixes. The 70 hp/liter was extraordinary for 1963.

Practical Exotic Car Ownership Unlike Ferraris or Maseratis that required constant maintenance, or Porsches that were harsh daily drivers, the Giulia SS offered genuine exotic car performance with Alfa Romeo’s reputation for being driveable, reliable, and serviceable – the thinking man’s supercar.

Timeless Bertone Styling While contemporaries like the Porsche 911 were controversial when new, and British sports cars looked dated, Franco Scaglione’s design for Bertone created something that looked futuristic in 1963 and remains stunning today. Few cars have aged as gracefully.

Racing Pedigree with Street Manners The Giulia SS combined genuine competition-derived technology (those Weber carbs, disc brakes, and twin-cam engine were all racing developments) with civilized street behavior. You got Shelby Cobra performance with Mercedes-Benz refinement – a combination unmatched by British, German, or American alternatives of the era.

“The whole process from selling my car to having it shipped was very easy. I got a reasonable offer based on the pictures I sent and after accepting the offer everything was handled quickly and efficiently including bill of sale, title transfer, shipping and payment. Nothing was finalized until after the wire transfer cleared. This is the right way to do business, easiest car sale I ever made.”

“A great experience, everything Alex promised to do he did, and all of his related staff, made the whole process painless. I received all pertinent information, and step my step instructions, every step of the way. From the initial sale, through payment transaction, right down the the shipping company, which Alex organized. Overall a wonderful experience for a car I have owned for over fifty years.”

“Having sold many cars in my lifetime, as most of you know, it always seemed to be so stressful and such an ordeal. When I was reluctantly and sadly ready to sell my 1965 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider and after visiting a number of sites online and then reading the various comments made by past people who had had dealings with Alex, I decided to contact him and see if he was interested in my car. The sale of my car turned out to be the easiest, most stress free experience ever. From start to finish it seemed like everyone in his company, including Alex, was there to bend over backward to make the transaction as stress free as possible and help you through the process quickly and painlessly. I would strongly recommend that if you have a car to sell, especially a classic car, contact Alex and this very professional company!”
