Sprint Speciale: Che Meravigliosa Automobile! Also known as the Alfa Romeo Giulia SS, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale both 101 Series were small sports cars manufactured by Alfa Romeo from 1959 to 1966. The first prototype of the Giulietta SS was presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1957, with two more prototypes soon following. Both cars used the Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine, a design with hemispheric combustion chambers and valve controlled directly by two overhead camshafts. Designed to compete with the Porsche 365, the Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale had a front engine with rear wheel drive. Interestingly, the drag coefficient of the Alfa Romeo Speciale is 0.28, the same as a Corvette C6, and was not improved for more than 20 years.

An easy way to distinguish the Giulia SS or Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale from the Giulietta SS is by the dashboard. The Giulia has a leather underside with the glove box at a different angle than the main fascia. The dashboard of the Giulietta is sloping and painted in one color without a leather underside. While 1,366 Giulietta Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale models and 1,400 Giulia Sprint Speciale units were produced throughout the years, approximately 25 cars were converted to right hand drive.

What’s The Difference: Sprint Speciale Questions Answered

Engine and Performance

  1. Engine Displacement: The Giulietta SS used a 1,290-cc twin-cam 4-cylinder, while the Giulia SS received the more-powerful 1,570-cc unit when it was introduced in March 1963.
  2. Power Output: The 1,570 cc (1.6 L) engine with Weber 40 DCOE2 carburetors was shared with the Giulia Sprint Veloce and has a maximum power output of 110 hp (82 kW) at 6,500 rpm, significantly more than the Giulietta’s 1.3L engine.
  3. Top Speed: With the 1300 cc engine maximum speed was above 100 mph (160 km/h). The 1600 cc engine made up to 129 mph (208 km/h) or >200 km/h possible.

Chassis and Braking

  1. Braking System: The Giulia had disc brakes vs drum brakes on the Giulietta, providing superior stopping power for the more powerful engine.
  2. Suspension Upgrades: The Giulia SS benefited from the updated Giulia platform’s improved suspension geometry and handling characteristics compared to the earlier Giulietta chassis.

Interior and Dashboard

  1. Dashboard Design: The Giulia has a leather underside with the glovebox at a different angle than the main fascia. The dashboard in the Giulietta has sloping design and is painted in one colour without a leather underside.
  2. Interior Appointments: The Giulia featured a wrapped bottom dash compared to the Giulietta, along with generally more upscale interior trim and materials.

Production and Timeline

  1. Production Timeline: The Giulietta Sprint Speciale was produced first (starting in 1957), while the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale was introduced in 1963 and continued until 1966.
  2. Model Positioning: The Giulia Sprint Speciale was essentially a re-named Giulietta with a 1.6L inline four, carrying the same styling as the Giulietta Sprint Speciale, representing an evolution rather than a complete redesign.

Technical Specifications

  1. Carburetion: The Giulia SS typically featured dual Weber 40 DCOE carburetors on the 1600cc engine, while the Giulietta SS used different carburetor setups appropriate for its smaller displacement engine.
