SELLING? 1961 MERCEDES-BENZ 300SL

Beverly Hills Car Club – 300SL Gullwing & Roadster Dealer

300sl-dealership

If you’re looking to buy classic Mercedes including the 1961 Mercedes Benz 300SL roadster, you’ve come to the right place! The Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster version was first introduced at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, and effectively replaced the Gullwing Coupe, which was retired earlier that year. Produced from 1957 to 1963, the 300SL Roadster saw 1,858 units come out of the factory. With approximately 300 units produced each year, with the exception of 1957 when 554 units were produced, the 300SL is still considered to be one of the most rare and sought-after of all the classic post-war Mercedes autos. The 300SL’s body was mainly steel, except for the aluminum hood, doors and trunk lid. It could also be ordered with an all-aluminum outer skin at a tremendous added cost. It is estimated that only 29 of these all-aluminum bodies were produced.

The exceptional automobiles sold by The Beverly Hills Car Club combine all the elements of their exclusive address: these cars are the very last word in tasteful elegance, chic classiness, and impressive sophistication, with unparalleled attention paid to their functional integrity and stylish perfection. This can also be said of the 1961 Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster, where impeccable design and exceptional engineering came together.

What makes the 1960 300SL tick for collectors?

The 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster (W198 II) is more than just a classic car; it’s a rolling sculpture, an engineering marvel, and a significant piece of automotive history. If you’re an owner considering “Sell my 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL,” you possess a vehicle that commands immense respect and desire among collectors worldwide. At Beverly Hills Car Club, we’ve spent two decades immersed in the world of classic cars, and the 300SL Roadster, particularly the 1961 model, holds a special allure.

The 300SL Roadster, which succeeded the iconic “Gullwing” coupe, was a masterpiece in its own right. Production of the Roadster ran from 1957 to 1963, with a total of only 1,858 units ever built. The 1961 model year is particularly noteworthy for several reasons:

  • Rarity: Only 250 300SL Roadsters were produced in 1961, making it a relatively scarce example of an already exclusive model.
  • Engineering Prowess: Built on a modified version of the Gullwing’s innovative tubular spaceframe chassis (W198 II), the Roadster featured the potent M198 3.0-liter inline-six engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, producing around 215 DIN horsepower. This engine, tilted to the side to allow for a lower hood line, was a direct descendant of Mercedes-Benz’s racing powerplants.
  • Enhanced Handling: The Roadster benefited from a revised rear suspension with a compensating spring, which tamed the Gullwing’s notorious oversteer tendencies and offered a more predictable and comfortable ride without sacrificing performance.
  • The Key 1961 Upgrade – Dunlop Disc Brakes: A crucial development for the 1961 model year was the standardization of Dunlop four-wheel disc brakes from March onwards. This was a significant technological advancement for the time, offering vastly improved stopping power and heat dissipation compared to the drum brakes on earlier models. A 1961 300SL Roadster equipped with these factory disc brakes is highly prized.
  • Design Icon: With its elegant lines, conventional doors for better practicality than the Gullwing, and an available sleek factory hardtop, the 300SL Roadster is an undisputed design icon. Its initial MSRP was around $10,950 – $11,000, a considerable sum in its day, reflecting its exclusivity and advanced engineering.
  • Legacy: The 300SL was voted “Sports Car of the Century” in 1999, a testament to its enduring impact on the automotive world.

Questions About Buying & Selling a 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL, Answered

What makes my 1961 300SL Roadster particularly valuable?

Several factors contribute to your car’s value. For a 1961 model, the presence of the factory-installed Dunlop four-wheel disc brakes is a major value point. Beyond that, originality (matching numbers engine, chassis, and body tags), overall condition (from concours to a well-preserved original or a project requiring restoration), completeness (tools, books, factory hardtop), and documented provenance (maintenance history, ownership records) are all critical. Even the original color combination can influence desirability.

What are the common challenges if I try to “sell my 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL” through auctions or private sales?

Selling a high-value classic like a 1961 300SL can present hurdles.

    • Auctions: While they offer visibility, they also come with substantial seller’s commission fees (often 10% or more), transportation costs, and marketing fees. There’s also the uncertainty of not meeting your reserve price, and the process can be lengthy and very public.

    • Auction Websites: These can broaden reach but still involve fees, the hassle of managing countless inquiries (many not serious), and the risks of dealing with unknown online entities.

    • Private Sales: Finding genuinely qualified buyers with the necessary funds can be incredibly time-consuming and potentially risky from a security standpoint. You’ll need to manage advertising, showings, negotiations, and complex paperwork, all while dealing with the uncertainty of payment security.

  • Anonymous Classic Car Buyers: Dealing with anonymous buyers lacks transparency and can leave you vulnerable.

“I’ve never sold a car as quickly and easy. I sent pictures and brief description of my car and got a call from Alex within 90 minutes. We agreed on a price and the money was wired into my account while we where still on the phone. Whole process took 10 minutes. His transport people called me later that same day and the car was picked up the following day. I strongly recommend doing business with Alex Manos.”

“My dad purchased his 280SL Mercedes when I turned 16 in 1984, so that I could have his old car to drive. He drove the car for the next 26 years before his untimely death in 2010. My mom knew that I loved the car and gave it to me. As my kids began to start driving and more cars became needed at our home, the Mercedes was not getting the love that it needed. I didn’t want to sell it, but I hated the idea of it not being used for someone’s complete enjoyment. I found a local place to sell the car, but the price offered was far too low for the quality of the car. 2 years later I was looking through my Mercedes information and found an ad that I had saved about Alex Manos. I called, thinking nothing would come of it. By the first phone call, I was sending him pictures. By the second phone call, he was offering to buy my car. By the third phone call, I was giving him bank information for a sale of the car. By the fourth phone call, I was finalizing pick up of the car with his completely wonderful transportation company. This was such an emotional situation for me, to part with the only “hobby” that my Dad had. Alex and the people that work for him made it painless. The best part for me? I couldn’t find the car on his website about 3 weeks later and to me-that means someone is enjoying it, hopefully in the California sun, driving around happy with their new purchase. That just feels good to me and makes me smile! Thank you Alex and team!”

“We were very reticent to sell our Mercedes 230 SL on an internet deal. We are naturally skeptical, so we did our homework on Alex Manos and his company. Everything looked great and we went ahead with the sale. We couldn’t be more pleased. The sale went quickly and easily and they made sure we were comfortable with the process at every step of the way. Even though our car had been stored outside under a tarp for 30 years, we agreed on a price that was fair to all. They really mean it when they say they’ll take a car in any condition. Their people came to transport the car, and were able to get it out of a tight situation. We waved goodbye to her as she went down the road on a flatbed, no dry eyes. Got a car to sell? Can’t do better then Alex Manos.”

Jamie, the driver was professional, courteous and helpful. It was a true pleasure conducting business with this company. I would highly recommend Alex to many of my friends as I belong to a collector car club.”
