The model was four years into its very successful production run when the 1959 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II debuted before an intrigued public. As it happens, the Silver Cloud I had been a quite suitable bridge between the earlier Silver Dawn and the high-powered Silver Dawn II. While both the Silver Dawn and the Silver Cloud I had employed six-cylinder engines (of differing sizes), the 1959 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II was motored along by a notably larger V-8. This engine had a displacement of 6.2 liters and increased the models weight ever so slightly. No matter, the full-size saloon was nevertheless quicker than its immediate predecessor, achieving a top speed of over 110 miles per hour. This power and speed increase was certainly appreciated by drivers, but there was a minor compromise in play: the ride was just a little bit rougher than that provided by the Silver Cloud Is straight-6.
By and large, the 1959 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II was cosmetically indistinguishable from the Silver Cloud I. Power steering was now present in every model and acceleration was upgraded considerably. Otherwise, it was a body-on-frame construction that allowed for coachbuilder configuration and variation, as had been the Silver Cloud I. These remained very much in the minority, with coachbuilders yielding coupe and drop head variants in the hundreds, while Silver Cloud II overall production numbered in the thousands. James Young, Mulliner, and Park Ward were among those who contributed to the creation of specialized Silver Cloud II coachworks.
